Consigliato!

If you want to know more about Wikileaks and the Assange saga, read this book. Stefania Maurizi has worked for years with Wikileaks and has used her first-hand knowledge of the organisation and of Julian Assange to write an inside account of the revelations of Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden and what has happened to them and to Assange himself. Heroes or villains? Whistleblowers or traitors? Maurizi has no doubt and makes no pretence of sitting on the fence. She makes a convincing argument that journalists must publish everything in their possession, without fear or favour, if it is true and in the public interest. She says Assange, who has spent a decade holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and and then in prison, did simply this - drawing the fury of the US and its complicit allies Britain and Sweden. The book is informed, passionate and mostly well-written. At the end I felt angry and indignant about Assange's treatment, which will probably become even worse if he is extradited to the United States. His health is failing and many people believe his life is at risk. The book isn't perfect, in my view. It is repetitive in parts, for example in its frequent reiteration of Assange's grim living conditions. Partly for this reason I think it could be shortened somewhat without losing anything of substance. Perhaps Maurizi is a bit too close to her subject. She is so clearly on his side that you sometimes fear you may not be getting the full story. She does not really talk about Assange the person, his character and the fact he may have Asperger syndrome until a brief passage at the end. Personally, I would have liked to read more on "Assange the man" and earlier on, but I understand this was a deliberate choice to focus on the issues, rather than the personality. In any case, I thoroughly recommend this readable, informative, and rather scary book, soon out in English, in an edition that casts more doubts on the Crown Prosecution Service under Keir Starmer
